Wrathful deity – White Mahakala

A thangka is a Tibetan painting that is traditionally used as a support for ones meditation practice. The imagery depicted in Tibetan paintings provides a guide for the elaborate visualizations that one does in Tibetan Buddhist practice. In Tibetan homes and monasteries, thangkas are considered sacred objects and are often placed above shrines.

White Mahakala is depicted with a fierce yet compassionate expression, symbolizing his dual role as a wrathful protector and a benevolent guardian. He is often shown with one face and two arms, seated in a dynamic pose, representing his readiness to act on behalf of his devotees. In his right hand, White Mahakala typically holds a flaying knife (kartika), which symbolizes cutting through obstacles and negative forces. In his left hand, he holds a skull cup (kapala) filled with jewels, representing the granting of wealth and prosperity. He is often adorned with a crown of skulls and other wrathful ornaments, indicating his fierce protective power.
