Tibetan Wood Handle Prayer Wheel
A Tibetan Wooden Prayer Wheel is a traditional Buddhist devotional object used for prayer and meditation. It consists of a cylindrical wooden or metal handle and a hollow wooden cylinder that houses a tightly rolled scroll of paper or cloth inscribed with Buddhist mantras or prayers. It is used as a means of accumulating merit and invoking blessings.
Tibetan Buddhists believes hold that spinning the prayer wheel has the same efficacy as chanting the mantras printed on the scroll within. It is thought that when the wheel is rotated, the blessings of the prayers are shared with everyone, both the individual who is spinning it and all sentient beings.
The wheel is held by its handle and spun clockwise with a light motion. Carving and decorating it with Buddhist images and symbols may bring luck and various advantages, including purification of bad karma, avoidance of obstacles, and the cultivation of positive energy.
