Rahula Thangka Painting
Thangkas are traditional Tibetan paintings used to facilitate meditation practice. Representing Rahula, this paintings commonly serve as visuals for audio Tibetan Buddhist instructions. They are often found hanging at shrines and homes, and considered sacred artifacts in monasteries.
The terrifying Nyingma protector deity Rahula is wrathful, with nine heads, and a huge face on its belly. The image of this Buddhist guardian is probably a Tibetan design. As a guardian of the “revealed treasure teachings (Terma),” Rahula rose to prominence in the early traditions of Tibetan Buddhism (Nyingma). His bottom body is a coiled snake spirit in Buddhist representations, while his upper body has four limbs, nine heads, and a thousand eyes. One sizable angry face can be seen in the center of the stomach. The belly, or stomach, has a face.
